Reports to: Building Principal, Southwest Elementary School
Beginning: 2024/2025 School Year
Overview: Serve as Robotics Team Advisor for an elementary school by coordinating and overseeing FIRST Lego League, Jr. (Kindergarten-2nd grade students) and FIRST Lego League (3rd-5th grade students).
Responsibilities:
- Pre-Season (May -August)
- Read, understand and follow FIRST Coach/Mentor Handbook.
- Inventory materials and tools and order supplies needed including tri-folds for Core Values poster
- Create team budget for upcoming year for FLL and JrFLL.
- Obtain sponsorships, write grants, fundraise.
- Recruit mentors/coaches (3 per team), parent volunteers and new students
- Host a team formation meeting in May that highlights the expectations and responsibilities of membership
- Secure all needed forms from volunteers and students and update necessary paperwork for the upcoming season.
- Register and pay for team via FIRST at the current cost of $ 225 per team.
- Order field setup kit the current cost of $75 once registration is paid (FLL only)
- Schedule outreach activities to promote STEM opportunities and inspire others to join.
- Organize and hold “kickoff” event for new challenge with solid understanding of current years’ theme.
- Establish a snack/beverage rotation for parents
- Build Season (September - December)
- View challenge videos of Project, Core Values, and Robot with students and coaches
- Set build schedule in accordance with coaches and teacher’s availability.
- Organize and assign volunteer as needed.
- Order additional robot supplies and project materials needed for current challenge theme.
- Oversee team design and programming of robot and provide resources as needed
- Take photos of each team member and coaches and print them for Core Values poster
- Obtain and organize sponsor logos for current year’s t-shirt design and communicate with graphic artist
- Design and order team t-shirts by making modifications as needed
- Oversee the documentation of the design/build of robot using an engineering notebook.
- Schedule and register for applicable competition event.
- Facilitate practice of judges interviews and project challenge presentations.
- Conduct team building experiences and print photos for Core Values poster
- Assist students with project research as needed
- Facilitate the electronic sign up of students on www.firstinspires.org and create electronic roster
- Order team swag and/or spirit items, such as hats, in preparation for competition
- Competition Season (November - December)
- Coordinate travel for team members and parents if needed
- Facilitate payment for competition event.
- Secure and bring all needed forms for competition events.
- Bring robot equipment, pit supplies, and project supplies to and from events.
- Attend all FIRST team events and competitions.
- Coach students through the judging process during competition.
- Facilitate semi-pro group photos of team
- Post-Season
- Thank sponsors, mentors, parents.
- Organize team banquet.
- Student recognition/Team awards.
- Organize any post season robotics demonstrations.
- Coordinate with other HPS Robotics Team Advisors as needed.
- Support curriculum integration, as needed.
- Serve on Robotics Advisory Board, as needed.
- OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED.
